Most confirmed cases with travel history reported travel to countries in Europe and North America, rather than West or Central Africa where the mpox virus is endemic. Transmission was probably through contact with contaminated bedding. The global transmission of the monkeypox virus has been on a scale not previously seen outside of Central Africa. The DRC reported more than 18,000 confirmed or suspected monkeypox cases from 2010 to 2019, up from about 10,000 from 2000 to 2009, and more than 6,000 suspected cases in 2020. This is combined with case information recorded by local Health Protection Teams in the UKHSA national case management system.
